The Australian Open 2002 - Seeds
1. Lleyton Hewitt
The first Australian to be seeded No. 1 for his home Grand Slam since Ken Rosewall in 1976.
2001 was a breakthrough year for Hewitt. The Aussie played near-perfect tennis to rout four-time champion Pete Sampras and win the U.S. Open crown.
After the win, he continued the terrific vein of form which culminated in firmly establishing himself as the player to beat and the world number one.
However, he suffered defeat in the Davis Cup finals and the attack of chicken pox he suffered recently might prove to be his undoing this year.
"The kid is so quick it's unbelievable. Those legs...I wish I had some of those legs for this old guy." -- Pete Sampras
