But he struck back as true champions often do.
A blistering start to the 2000/01 season saw him emerge as a leading scorer in the Premiership. He silenced his critics by scoring eight goals in four games for Liverpool - including two in the FA Cup final as the Reds beat Arsenal 2-1 towards the end of the season.
