Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday assured that his government will bring inflation in the country under reasonable control.

The prime minister was addressing Congress workers, intellectuals and several members of the NGO's in Bengaluru.

Dr Singh said his government is doing its best to bring inflation under control and in its efforts to do so, it is incurring heavy losses.

He said the government has been shielding the poor by keeping the prices of LPG, kerosene and diesel low as a result of which heavy losses are being incurred.

Dr Singh further said that there is an international dimension to this problem and shortage of food grains is one of the major reasons for inflation.

The prime minister said his government was able to achieve a growth rate of 9 per cent. He said the National Democratic Alliance government was unable to achieve a good growth rate as it failed to deliver rapid economic growth.

Dr Singh said that Bengaluru had put India on the world map and played a vital role in transforming the image of the country.

He said that between 1999 and 2004 when the Congress was in power in the state, Bengaluru particularly had seen an impressive growth.

However in the following years, it was not the same, he added. He assured that the Congress would restore the past glory of Bengaluru, which was the pride of India a few years back.

Dr Singh said the inauguration of the International Airport at Hyderabad before the one at Bengaluru was proof enough to show that things had slowed down.

The Bengaluru airport was conceived before the Hyderabad airport. However, the Hyderabad airport was inaugurated before the Bengaluru airport, which is yet to commence operations, he added.

Terming the Kannada speaking people as generous and forward looking, Dr Singh said they are the reason for the growth of the IT sector in Bengaluru.

He, however, added that Bengaluru needs long term planning and this could be achieved only by the Congress.
