Slain British girl Scarlette Keeling's mother Fiona Mackeown, who feared a threat to her life from drug mafia in Goa, on Monday got police protection.

"We have provided her the police protection as she had communicated to us in writing that there is fear to her life from drug mafia," Superintendent of Police Bosco George told PTI.

Fiona had last week expressed fears to her life from the drug cartel as according to her, she had exposed the drug trade in the state.

Scarlette Keeling, a British teenager, was found dead on Goa's popular Anjuna beach on February 18 and police have arrested two locals who allegedly drugged, raped and left Scarlette to die on the beach.

Scarlett's mother, Fiona, who had initiated the struggle against the police system and subsequently exposed the police's lethargy in the case, had written a letter to the police seeking protection.

Fiona's advocate had stated that they would move to the high court seeking protection to her as she had been told that her life is in danger.

George, while confirming the police protection, did not disclose what kind of security is provided to Fiona. "I can't disclose all the details but adequate security is provided to her," he said.

Meanwhile, sources close to Fiona confirmed that she is planning to take Scarlette's body back to the UK on Tuesday.

"All the formalities with the undertaker are completed and the body will be shifted tomorrow," sources close to Fiona said on Monday.
