Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday expressed serious concern over 'slow progress' and 'improper implementation' of the centrally-sponsored National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi.

Gandhi, who is on a three-day visit to the constituency, participated in a meeting of the district monitoring committee in Sultanpur in which senior district officials were also present.

According to sources, the Congress general secretary expressed his 'unhappiness' on 'slow progress' in the implementation of the scheme.

Gandhi told the meeting that he would bring in experts from Andhra Pradesh to suggest ways and means for proper implementation of NREGS, sources said.

Another meeting with district officials will be held on February 16.

Gandhi said he would try to get the rules governing the NREGS amended to ensure that the money under the scheme was transferred straight to the accounts of the village pradhans, they said.

He also assured that the funds for NREGS would be increased.

The district Panchayat Raj officer had been issued a warning for tardy progress in the scheme, sources said adding Gandhi also expressed resentment over slow progress of the 'Swajal Dhara' project under which water tanks were built in the villages.
