Suspended Orissa cadre IPS officer B B Mohanty, evading arrest in connection with the escape of his son Bitti -- convicted of raping a German national -- on Thursday sought two weeks to surrender before the Rajasthan police.

The apex court had said that his bail plea will only be heard by the trial court in Rajasthan after he surrenders.

BB Mohanty, who holds the rank of director general of police with the Orissa police, has been evading arrest since May 28, 2007 after the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jaipur, issued an NBW against him on June 8.

The NBW was issued after the IPS officer failed to explain the escape of his son Bitti, whose release on parole from a Rajasthan prison, was facilitated by him on a surety.

Meanwhile, cops were put on alert at the local court in the collectorate in Jaipur following reports that Mohanty would surrender before the Rajasthan police, a senior police official said.

"So far no one has surrenderedÂ…We are monitoring the place and activities around the chief judicial magistrate's court following Mohanty's plea seeking two weeks time from the Supreme Court for surrender," the official said.

"It is a routine exercise that the police conduct after any news break," he added.
