Beleaguered Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, facing impeachment proceedings, is expected to make some "important announcements" in an address to the nation on Wednesday during an event in Islamabad to mark the country's independence day.

A number of VIPs have been invited to the 'Azadi Show' to be held at the Presidency, during which Musharraf will address the nation tomorrow night, official sources were quoted as saying by the Dawn News channel today.

The sources said Musharraf would make "certain important announcements" during his address to be beamed live by state-run TV.

All arrangements have been finalised for the gala event and a government spokesman contradicted a news report that the show had been cancelled.

The 'Azadi Show' will be celebrated according to schedule at the Presidency and reports regarding its cancellation are "misplaced", he said.

The spokesman, however, said the independence day reception that was to be hosted on August 14 has been cancelled. An official statement said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had cancelled the event, which was to be held at a five-star hotel, as part of his drive to cut expenses on non-developmental activities.
