Pakistan's former caretaker human rights minister Ansar Burney says he was aware Kashmir Singh, released from Lahore jail last month after 35 years behind bars, was a "spy" but took up the case as he was moved by his love story and wanted to reunite the star-crossed couple.
"I still remember the day I went to Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore and Kashmir Singh told me his love story and how he got married to Paramjit Kaur. After listening to him, I was so moved I decided to reunite the pair," Burney told reporters on Wednesday.
He said the prisoner was weeping uncontrollably within the jail walls and "he told me he was not worried about his life, but always thought about his wife."
Burney, who is in Amritsar to visit Bhikhiwind village to gather evidence on the innocence of Indian death row convict Sarabjit Singh from his family, said he will also stay at the freed man's house in a Hoshiarpur village as "Kashmir Singh also loves me and has invited me there."
