The seven-member inquiry committee, constituted to probe an incident of alleged rape at the Aligarh Muslim University Women's college on September 11, has concluded that the entire incident was "fabricated and baseless".

According to the University's spokesperson Dr Rahat Abrar, a preliminary report of the inquiry committee, headed by former Vice-Chancellor of Agra University Professor Habibur Rehman, said that the entire episode was "orchestrated". The report added that the incident stemmed from a deep rooted conspiracy to destabilise the law and order situation at the campus.

The committee has concluded that the alleged victim was a creation of the conspiracy as she had claimed that her name had been dragged into the controversy with malafide intentions, Abrar added.

The committee, which was instituted after protests in the women's college, included three female members of the teaching staff. The committee will submit its report shortly.
