The Centre on Wednesday said the situation in Kolkata, where Army was called in following violence in some parts, was "somewhat tense but fully under control".
Home Minister Shivraj Patil told the Lok Sabha that the trouble started following an agitation by people in which boulders were placed on roads and stone-pelting was indulged in.
"More than 50 people were injured, including a top police officer. But the police had brought the situation under control and the Rapid Action Force has also been deployed," he said.
"The state government has conveyed to us that the situation is tense but fully under control," Patil said. Replying to a query from Leader of the Opposition L K Advani on whether the home ministry was consulted before calling out the Army, he said it was not necessary for the state government to consult the Centre.
"I don't think the home ministry or the defence ministry was consulted," he said.
