Former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif, spending life in exile in Saudi Arabia, is understood to have been in talks with the leadership of the kingdom to return to his homeland.

Sharif said he was "closely watching" the situation in Pakistan after President Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency on Saturday.

"Nodbody can stop me from returning to Pakistan," Sharif said, but refused to divulge any detail.

The former premier said he knew that European Union envoys met Musharraf on Monday to express their concern on the steps taken by him.

"Our standpoint is that Musharraf should step down. He is now a part of the problem," he told CNN-IBN.

Sharif demanded immediate restoration of the Constitution and return to civilian rule.
