Meerut: I857 Uprising Celebrations Begin

May 4, 2007
Ask any Meerut local what they feel about 1857, and they all are proud to say that they were the first people to revolt against the British and that when they visit any place outside their city, people recall the mutiny which is a source pride to them.

"Besides the First War of Independence, very few people know that it was in Meerut where the last Congress session was held in 1946. After the session, India achieved independence. So, all of us in Meerut feel proud that we were the first to start the revolt against the British and also put an end to the British regime after the Congress session of 1946," says Suresh Agarwal, a shopkeeper.
