A soldier's dream betrayed

May 3, 2007
The family has compiled photocopies of letters, e-mail and fax messages, telephone bills and other documents to substantiate their claim that they tried to meet the Dalai Lama and address their grievances to the Tibetan leader.

"The so-called transaction was made in cash and not by cheque as it is usually done, hence is untraceable," points out Rajesh Kaushal.

Ngodup Dorjee, additional secretary, home department, Central Tibetan Administration, told rediff.com, "They (the Kaushals) were engaged in a legal battle with us. Now they have filed a further appeal since they were not satisfied with the court's verdict. Everything that is being claimed against the Council is baseless. We on our part did everything legally in concurrence with the required protocol and laws of the land. The matter is again in court and I don't have any further comment".

Captain Kaushal passed away in August 2003, unable to enjoy his retirement with his family. Though he suffered from physical and mental stress, he braved the elements and made a number of trips to Dharamsala. The officer, who trained 11 future admirals of the Indian navy, suffered two cardiac arrests in close succession.

"His health deteriorated completely. He was under tremendous stress and wanted to win back the property at any cost. It is for him we are taking up this cause," says Raj Kaushal, standing next to a garlanded photograph of his father. "We want to reclaim our rightful property."

"All I want is justice now," says Sushma Kaushal. "I want it at any cost for the sake of my husband and my family."
