A Pakistani national who allegedly tried to travel on the Lahore-bound Samjhauta Express without any valid documents has been arrested in Amritsar, officials said.
Amjad Ali, hailing from Mustafabad in Lahore, had come to India without a valid passport or visa last November and was trying to board the train on Thursday evening when he was caught by Railway Protection Force personnel, they said.
Security for the Samjhauta Express was stepped up in the wake of two blasts on the train on February 19 that claimed the lives of 68 people, many of them Pakistanis.
When the train was getting ready to leave for Pakistan from the Attari Railway station, Ali jumped from the railway over-bridge to the tracks and tried to enter the train by evading security personnel.
But he failed in his attempt, the officials said. Ali, during interrogation, told police that he entered India by hiding in a toilet in the Samjhauta Express.
Though he was intercepted at Attari then, he managed to escape, they said. Ali visited Gorakhpur and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Mumbai, Ajmer and New Delhi during his stay in India.
He spent the last few days at a religious site in Amritsar, they said.
A knife, telephone diary, a wristwatch and two bottles of whisky were found on him. RPF Deputy Inspector General Anoop Srivastava interrogated Ali, the officials said.
