In a move that can rattle its political rivals, the Bahujan Samaj Party government in Uttar Pradesh on Friday said it will give one month to those victimised by the Samajwadi Party government to register first information reports with the police.
"The decision follows my promise made during the Assembly election campaign to wipe out the jungle raj and to deliver justice to every individual," Chief Minister Mayawati said.
"Ab us wade ko pura karne ka samay aa gaya hai... Ab meri
kalam mein satta ki takat hai (It is time to fulfill my promise. Now my pen has the power of authority)," Mayawati said, expressing gratitude to people for reposing faith in the BSP by giving it a complete majority.
"The victimised people could register their FIRs within one month at the concerned police stations," she said adding, "Special counters will be opened at the offices of the district police chiefs to facilitate registration of the complaints."
She said that necessary action would be taken after duly probing the complaints.
The chief minister said that the possession of the properties forcibly occupied by criminals would also be restored to their genuine owners.
She asked the police to take a humane approach during the drive and to strive for compromise in petty offences.
The chief minister also stated in unambiguous words that while dealing with the complaints the government would proceed in accordance with the law and irrespective of the caste, creed and political affiliations of the guilty.
