If it was Cilice for Kavya, it was clevis for the star Indian-American speller Samir Patel.
Patel, 13, from Colleyville, Texas, a perennial crowd favorite for the past four years, was counting on taking the title in his fifth and final appearance.
But he had his dreams dashed as 'clevis,' which means a type of fastening device, proved to be his waterloo.
He misspelt it 'c-l-e-v-i-c-e'.
He has appealed for the ruling saying he should have been given an alternate pronunciation of the word and it was denied.
