A special investigation team of the Jammu and Kashmir police, probing cases of missing persons, Friday exhumed the second body from a graveyard in Ganderbal area even as people shouted slogans and demanded death sentence to those personnel involved in fake encounters.
As the SIT headed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Farooq Ahmad reached Saloora village in Ganderbal area, 27 kms from Srinagar, to exhume the body believed to be that of Nazir Ahmad Deki, a resident of Kokernag area in Anantnag district, hundreds of people tried to break the security cordon around the graveyard, official sources said. Deki has been missing since February last year and suspected to be killed in a fake encounter.
Deki's wife and brother, who were present at the time of the exhumation, identified the body from the clothes, they said. Forensic experts took samples of the body for DNA testing and later the body was handed over to the relatives.
As police tried to prevent agitating people from moving into the graveyard, the mob pelted stones at them. The police retaliated by carrying out baton charge and later resorted to firing tear gas shells. However, the crowd refused to give in and continued to shout slogans against those police personnel who have allegedly killed innocent civilians, the sources said.
Police had to fire few rounds in air to disperse the crowd. However, a ding-dong battle between protestors and police continued even after the firing, they said.
