Buoyed by its victory in the Gujarat assembly polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday claimed Himachal Pradesh too would go the same way on December 28 when results of elections to the legislature in the hill state is declared.

"BJP's victory in Gujarat assembly election is spectacular. We will win in Himachal Pradesh with a bigger margin," party in-charge for Himachal Satyapal Jain said.

"Based on field reports, we are confident BJP would form the next government in the hill state with a comfortable majority", Jain, accompanied by state BJP president Jairam Thakur, said.

Modi had served as BJP general secretary in-charge of Himachal Pradesh from 1997-2001.

Jain, who is also convenor of BJP national legal cell, said the petition filed by senior Congress minister Sat Mahajan in the high court seeking postponment of counting of votes till the term of the present House was over on March 9 will not stand judicial scrutiny.

He said the party at a meeting of its office-bearers in Shimla on Sunday decided to oppose any such petition. "BJP will intervene in the Mahajan petition and oppose it vehemently," Jain said.

The BJP leader requested Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to show sportsman spirit and resign if people's mandate goes against the Congress on December 28.

"Even if he does not wish to go with honour, the President has the power under Article 356 to dismiss a government which has lost people's support," Jain added.
