Two groups of Muslims on Sunday clashed at Kharnagar Bazar in Meerut and resorted to stone pelting, prompting police to step up security and arrest 20 people.

The groups led by Banish Qurashi and Ayub Ansari clashed this morning after an argument over the construction of a gate at a government property, with one of the groups opposing the project.

District Magistrate Mukesh Meshram and the superintendent of police went to the scene with additional police forces to restore normalcy.

Meshram told PTI on Sunday afternoon that 20 people were arrested and cases under the IPC and Criminal Law Amendment Act were registered against them.

SSP Dipesh Juneja said one Danish of Qurashi Lane had filed a complaint last night that the groups had threatened residents of Badhvali gali of Delhi Gate, hurled abuses and allegedly looted two gold chains.

Police have registered a case in this regard.

Juneja said the group led by Ayub Ansari filed reports that six members of the rival group had hurled abuses, broken glasses and resorted to brick batting. Police have registered a case against all of them.

Police also monitored the two groups' activities last night, he said.
