Extradited gangster Abu Salem's application to enroll in the voters' list in Uttar Pradesh's Nizamabad has been rejected.

His lawyer said he will move court on the matter.

The rejection will be a blow to Salem's dreams of entering the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Nizamabad sub-divisional magistrate Vidya Shankar Singh said he had not been residing in the area for the past 14 years and that he also did he present himself personally for a plea in this regard.

Singh said he had examined the matter thoroughly.

The jailed gangster and one-time associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, extradited from Portugal along with former Bollywood actress Monica Bedi, had said he wanted to contest the coming assembly elections in the state.

Posters featuring his photographs with Diwali and Eid greetings had sprung up at various places in this constituency and the regional political party Apna Dal said it would back him.
