Doctors in arms
A group of medical students were willing to speak to rediff.com but not to divulge their names. "We're not allowed to," one of them said. They are in their early 20s, studying at a medical college in Mumbai.
"We're here to protest the lathi-charge," one of them said. "Debate on the reservation issue is understandable but what happened on Saturday was inexcusable."
Prod them a little and they all said they believe that if there is a political motive behind the reservations proposal, it is wrong. "Give people quotas based on economic status, if you have to, but not on caste basis," one of the boys said.
"There are other ways of helping people out. The government doesn't have to steal the seats of those of us who rely only on merit," another said.
They talked about how there are already so many quotas and one more added to the list would just be 'tragic'. But, more than the issue of reservations, they were aching to talk about what happened on Saturday.
