Press Council of India wants electronic media brought under it

The government should formulate a law to bring the electronic media under the purview of the Press Council of India, its Chairman Justice G N Ray has said.

A law is needed to widen the purview of the council and bring the electronic media under it, Justice Ray told reporters in Faizabad on Friday night. Deliberations were currently going on in this regard with the government, he said.

Ray, who was accompanied by six members of the Council, also met members of different communities in Ayodhya and took stock of the developments in the temple town on December 6, 1992.

Exhorting people to maintain communal amity, he said incidents like blasts in Varanasi were equally distressing for members of all sects and communities.
