A Hindu member of the ruling party in the Provincial Assembly in Karachi was on Wednesday assaulted by opposition members in the House after he allegedly wrote an "objectionable letter" to a woman legislator.
Iswar Lal, a minority representative from Hyderabad, was beaten up and virtually thrown out of the assembly with his clothes torn by members of the Pakistan People Party Parlimentarians after Shazia Maree complained to the speaker and showed him letters allegedly written to her by Lal.
"As soon as Shazia informed the speaker that Iswar Lal had written an objectionable letter, members of the PPPP got agitated and started assaulting him," eye-witnesses said.
"He was severely assaulted and virtually thrown out. Nevertheless, Iswar Lal still had the strength to walk off the assembly in shame," they said.
Later, Maree told reporters that Lal had been writing her letters, sending text messages and calling on her mobile and residence phone numbers for the last 18 months.
"I had informed the ruling party benches, but they turned a deaf ear giving Iswar Lal the liberty to continue with his unethical, uncivilised antics," she claimed.
According to Maree, she complained to the speaker after Lal send her a letter on Wednesday while the assembly was debating on the provincial budget.
"This is an honourable forum and only honourable people should be allowed to enter the assembly. It is a shame that desperate, uncultured and uncivilised people have entered the honourable floor of the assembly," she said.
