A special team consisting of the Visakhapatnam police and elite anti-extremist commandos on Tuesday shot dead four Maoists in between Tangonkota and Chingonkota villages of East Godavari district.

When the special party was engaged in combing operations, the Maoists opened fire were killed in retaliatory fire, a police statement said. The police also recovered three weapons -- a self-loading rifle, a .303 rifle and one carbine -- from the scene. The identities of the deceased are yet to be established.

Meanwhile, 19 left-wing extremists surrendered in Warangal, claiming that they were disillusioned with the party ideology.

Two more CPI-Maoists surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Prakasam district, expressing their disgust with the party ideology.
