India, US discuss bilateral relations

India and the United States on Friday held further discussions on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in civilian nuclear energy, in the backdrop of the recent developments in that area.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Richard Boucher, who arrived in New Delhi Thursday for talks with his counterpart S Jayashankar, Joint Secretary (US), on the issue, met Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran.

He also held discussions with Jayashankar. There were also bilateral consultations on regional issues.

The visit by the US officials comes close on the heels of Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran's tour of the US where he held talks with several top officials of the US administration including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns.

Both of them assured Saran of Bush administration's commitment to the Indo-US nuclear deal.
