An unidentified militant and an Army jawan were killed and four jawans injured as security forces foiled militants' attempt to storm the heavily-guarded municipal council building in Sopore township on Friday, official sources said.

Two militants, reportedly wearing army uniforms, appeared near the municipal council building being guarded by Central Reserve Police Force personnel at Kraliteng in Sopore, 55 kilometres from Srinagar, around 1230 hours with the intention to storm the building.

The ultras were, however, confronted by the road opening party of Border Security Force, which was patrolling the area triggering a fierce gunbattle that was still continuing when last reports were received.

Troops of Rashtriya Rifles, local police and CRPF parties stationed in the town also joined the BSF to neutralise the militants and soon a gunfight broke out, the sources said.

In the initial firing, they said an unidentified militant was killed and five security personnel including an army jawan were injured. The army jawan, sepoy Rajinder Singh of 22 Rashtriya Rifles later succumbed to injuries.

A BSF spokesman, when contacted, said the militants were apparently planning a suicide attack on the municipal council building in the north Kashmir town.

Both the ultras were heavily armed and moving towards the municipal council building being guarded by CRPF, the spokesman said adding BSF personnel challenged the duo just short of the guarded complex upon which the ultras opened fire causing bullet injuries to constable Kumar of 133 battalion.

The spokesman said the whole area was under tight cordon of security forces and efforts are on to neutralise the militants.
