Relief disbursement in the quake-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir was kickstarted on Wednesday with Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed distributing Rs 4.3 crore to the survivors of 11 villages in Uri and Tangdhar.

The first installment under the National Calamity Relief Fund was distributed in separate functions in nine villages of Tanghdar and two of Uri. While Rs 50,000 was distributed to each of the next of kin of those killed in the October 8 quake in Uri, Rs 40,000 was given away for each of those whose houses have been derstroyed in Uri and Tangdhar.

"Within the next two to three days, Rs 5-6 crore a day will be disbursed among those affected so that the entire relief disbursement is completed within the next 15 days," Sayeed said handing over the cheques for the amount to survivors in Uri.

Pointing out that the immediate priority of the administration was to provide a "roof above each head" before the onset of winter, the Chief Minister said mobile units of Jammu and Kashmir Bank would go to villages so that those affected can encash the amount without any hassles.
