The ruling Congress bagged the crucial Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in the civic elections.

The Congress secured 29 wards out of the 59 in the VMC. Its leftist allies got 17 wards while the main opposition Telugu Desam Party managed to win only 10 wards. Three Independents also emerged victorious.

Big win for Congress in AP civic polls

The elections were held in VMC in two phases -- on September 24 and 30. The counting of votes was taken up on Monday. Due to the heavy rains and floods, 14 wards were under water, leading to postponement of polls in those wards to September 30.

The Communist Party of India won nine wards while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) got eight wards. The Congress is likely to leave the post of deputy mayor to its leftist allies.

With the VMC also in its kitty, the Congress has made a clean sweep of all the 11 municipal corporations in the state. The Telugu Desam could not win a single municipal corporation.
