A Shariat court in Muzaffarnagar would persuade a man to 'adopt' his two-year-old daughter, after he refused to bring up the girl alleging infidelity of his wife. "The court would persuade the father to adopt his child Amrin," Mufti Zulfiqar, one of the nine members of the Shariat court and chairman of Uttar Pradesh Imam Organisation, said on Thursday.
Javed refused to entertain the plea for DNA test of the child, saying, "It's not acceptable under Shariat law." Observing that a child born during 'nikah period' cannot be treated as illicit under Shariat, the court, meanwhile, asked Amrin's father Javed to file a reply by December 2.
Javed's former wife Sajida approached the Shariat court, requesting it to persuade him to bring up their daughter after he allegedly went back on his commitment to do so. Javed was slapped a fine of Rs 5.25 lakh three days ago and a social boycott by a local mahapanchayat for not keeping his word of taking care of the girl after one year of divorce.
He married Sajida three years ago and filed for divorce after she became pregnant, citing 'infidelity' as the ground and refusing to accept the child as his. On October 24, 2004, the village panchayat allowed the divorce provided Javed brought up the child after a year.
Both parties agreed to the condition. On June 3, he married again and his second wife refused to adopt the child. Sajida, too, has decided to remarry, leaving the two-year-old in the lurch.
