National Democratic Alliance convenor George Fernandes has said that a third front might emerge at the national level.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Tuesday, he said such a formation "will strengthen the NDA".

He said this in response to a query on whether there would be a third front equidistant from the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Fernandes, however, refused to elaborate on the matter.

He denied that the NDA had outlived its utility. He said, "There are people and forces working towards that end".

On Bihar, Fernandes asserted that the NDA would form the government in the state and ruled out the prospects of a hung assembly.

The NDA has projected Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar as its chief ministerial candidate, he said.

He also ruled out the possibility of a post-poll arrangement with Lok Janshakti Party in the event of NDA falling short of numbers, saying, "no post poll alliance with Ram Vilas Paswan".

Speaking about how the Bihar outcome would affect the Unite Progressive Alliance government, he said, "I don't think it needs Bihar to rattle (UPA government). It is very well rattled already".

He said while veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Jyoti Basu had said the Congress should be given chief ministership in Bihar, his party colleague Sitaram Yechury had taken a different stand.
