The prosecution in the Best Bakery case on Monday screened a videotape in a special court showing the rescue operation carried out by the police on March two, 2002, a day after the bakery was attacked by a violent crowd during the post-Godhra riots.

Fourteen people were killed in the attack on the Bakery in Vadodara.

The court allowed the videotape as evidence, saying it was relevant to the case.

The video was shot by cameraman Gautam Chauhan, who has already deposed before the court.

The court, on March 28, had allowed the prosecution to examine the videographer. It had also allowed the examination of the owner of a video parlour who had entered into a contract with the police to record the rescue operation.

The defence lawyers had objected to the screening, saying legal procedures regarding acceptance of a video film as a piece of evidence should be first completed before the video was screened before the court.

However, the court rejected the plea.

A special court in Mumbai is conducting the re-trial in the case after the Supreme Court directed the transfer of the case to Maharashtra.
