In an unprecedented gesture, Democratic candidate for President John Kerry suspended his campaign for a week to mourn Ronald Reagan. The former president will be laid to rest with full state honors, which include services in California and Washington, DC.

From Wednesday morning, he will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol. This will stay open around the clock to allow the public to pay its respects, until the state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Friday morning.

A 1999 photograph shows an image of Reagan adorning one of the proposed designs of a California state license plate commemorating the 40th President. 'Gipper' was Reagan's nickname, referring to a movie character he once played.
