2003 gave a cruel parting shot when a devastating earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, struck Iran. The epicentre was the historic town of Bam in Kerman province, southeast Iran, a city famous for its mud houses and mosques.

The quake struck on December 28 and the death toll is placed at over 30,000.

The world rushed to help Iran in its hour of need. Even the Bush administration, which had dubbed Iran part of the Axis of Evil, contacted the Iranian government directly and sent aid. Pakistan permitted an Indian Air Force aircraft to fly over Pakistan to carry aid and supplies to Iran.
