Despair, anguish and hope...

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, removed from the mainland at the best of times, have been ravaged by the killer waves. It is feared that entire tribes may have been wiped out from the far-flung islands in the group, and that the final death toll may be mind-boggling.

The islands, which are a popular tourist destination at this time of the year, have also seen scores of tourists stranded at Port Blair airport, with communication links in total collapse.
