The Gujarat police on Wednesday arrested one of the accused in the Godhra train carnage, Usman Abdul Gani Coffeewala.
But they had to face stiff resistance as a mob pelted stones when they went to Godhra town to arrest him.
Five or six policemen received minor injuries in the incident. The police had to open fire and burst teargas shells to disperse the mob, Sub-Inspector, Anti-Dacoity Squad, R G Patel said.
"The situation was, however, brought under control and there is no tension now. We are in the process of registering offences against rioters," the official added.
With the arrest of Coffeewala, the number of those held in the case has gone up to 92, Patel said.
Patel said Coffeewala, a resident of Mohammedi Mohalla in the sensitive Polan Bazar area, was involved in several offences.
