Badami in Karnataka is today a small town of tree-lined roads and rocky hillocks skirting a man-made lake. But in the sixth and seventh centuries, it was the capital of the mighty Chalukya dynasty, and was called Vadapi.

The Bhutanatha temples at the far end of the lake appear to float on water. The architecture of these temples varies in time and style, and they may have been built between the seventh and 11th centuries.

Close to Badami are the towns of Aihole and Pattadakal, where well-preserved Chalukya temples can be found.
