The Hyderabad Police on Friday arrested a Roman Catholic priest, wanted by the Interpol in a sexual assault case in Chicago in the United States.

Additional Director-General of Police (Criminal Investigation Department) M L Kumawat said that Selva Raj Polisetti (46) was taken into custody by the CID sleuths from his hideout at Yamjal village in Rangareddy district.

Selva Raju is alleged to have sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl working in the St Tancissus Cathlic Parish in Chicago, United States, between January 1, 2001 and April 29, 2002. He fled to India after committing the offence, according to a lookout notice put out by the Interpol.

Selva Raju, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, went to the United States on an Indian passport four years ago and stayed at the catholic parish.

The office of International Affairs of the Criminal Division of the US Department of Justice referred the case to Interpol and a complaint was booked on May 16, 2002.

Kumawat said Selva Raju will be produced before a magistrate, adding the CID have informed the Interpol and the US authorities for further action.
