Three prominent activists of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party were on Friday evening gunned down by militants in two incidents in Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's native Bejibehara town.

In the first incident, militants fired at two PDP activists in the Bejibehara market, 45km from Srinagar, in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag.

"One activist, identified as Gul Mohammad, died on the spot while Bashir Ahmad Ganai received serious bullet injuries," said a police official in Anantnag adding Ganai was shifted to the Bone and Joint hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Police rushed to the spot immediately and the area was searched.

Late on Friday night, two more PDP activists were gunned down by militants while they were crossing a bridge in village Veer near Bejibehara, police said.

The duo was identified as Ghulam Mohammad Bhat and Abdul Gani Sheikh.
