Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday said her Bahujan Samaj Party was not in favour of an out-of-court settlement to the Ayodhya issue.
At a press conference in New Delhi, she asked if there was any unanimity on the issue. "First let there be unanimity, then you can address this question."
Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati had sent a proposal to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board for a solution to the dispute.
Mayawati's statement came minutes after Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia warned of an agitation if the disputed land was not handed over to Hindus.
Togadia demanded that the seer's formula be made public.
Meanwhile, asked if Hindus would give up their claims on the disputed structures in Mathura and Varanasi in return for a Ram temple in Ayodhya, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "The BJP only wants a solution to the Ayodhya problem and the issue should not be allowed to linger.
"If the issue is resolved through negotiations then it would be the best way out. But if not, then courts would be the best route."
When told that the VHP was against any quid pro quo on the Ayodhya issue, Naqvi said, "All these organisations have a freedom to place their views. But it is not necessary that we should agree with all that they say."
