INTERNATIONAL NEWS Chinaman in space On October 15, China became the third nation -- after the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America -- to put a man in space, when Lieutenant Colonel Yang Liwei successfully orbited Earth several times in the Shenzhou V, and returned safely home after 21-hour flight. Buoyed by the success, China announced it would concentrate on launching lunar and outer space probe programmes. 'China would strive for breakthroughs in space rendezvous and docking technology for launching a space lab and eventually a manned space station,' Zhang Qingwei, deputy chief commander of China's manned space programme, said.
