Mango kernel kills four in Orissa

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

Mango kernel has killed four persons in Butedi village of Kandhamal district in Orissa since Saturday, a local official said on Monday.

Four were also taken ill, Sarpanch Isak Patamajhi said.

People in this district depend on cultivation of maize and millet. Scanty rainfall this year has forced them to depend on wild roots, mango kernel and rotten meat. More then 12 people have died in Kandhamal over the past 15 days after eating contaminated food, he said.

The district administration deputed the local tahasildar and district health officials to the village on Monday to take stock of the situation. They will submit their report in the evening, a revenue official told rediff.com

Last year around 25 people had died after eating poisoned mango kernel in neighbouring Raigada district.
