Death toll in Orissa boat tragedy rises to 26

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

The death toll in Saturday's boat tragedy that occurred in Batarani River in Orissa's Jajpur district rose to 26 on Tuesday with the recovery of four bodies.

The bodies were fished out by rescue teams at Jajpur and Bhadrak.

The boat, going from Solampur Ghat in Bhadrak district to Devigada Ghat in Jajpur, was ferrying 70 people, when it hit a sand bank throwing the passengers into the river. About 25 were rescued, while 14 are still listed as missing.

Most of the missing passengers are from Sholampur and Maninathpur villages in Jajpur district and from the Nuapada village in Bhadrak district.

Nine naval divers have been posted at the river downstream to locate bodies and survivors.

They are helped by fire brigade personnel and CRPF jawans.

The state has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each for the families of the dead and ordered an administrative inquiry into the incident.
