Raghunath temple to reopen on Wednesday

The Raghunath temple in Jammu, which was attacked by militants on Sunday, will be reopened to devotees on Wednesday after a purification ceremony, chief priest Vishal Shastri said on Tuesday.

"I called a meeting of all the scholars of Jammu. They felt that a purification yagna should be performed in the temple from 10am on Wednesday and it will be over in four to five hours. After that, the temple will be reopened for devotees and puja-path will start as per tradition," he said.

Shastri favoured arms being given to temple security staff and was all for the formation of a temple defence committee on the lines of the village defence committee scheme in Kashmir.

"Our security staffers don't possess any arms. They carry only sticks. If they are given arms, they can provide better security. It wouldn't have been possible for the militants to enter the temple if they [the guards] had arms," he said.

"Even when the temple was attacked earlier, we had made a request that a temple defence committee be formed on the lines of village defence committees," Shastri added.

Meanwhile, normalcy is slowly returning to the city.
