J&K Congress leader shot dead by militants

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Congress leader Mohammad Sikanker Khan was gunned down by militants in an ambush near Batmallo bus stand in Srinagar when returning home after attending the swearing in ceremony of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the chief minister.

His two bodyguards were also killed in the attack.

Khan was defeated from the Karnak constituency in the recently concluded assembly election.

Police sources said one civilian, who was also travelling in the vehicle, was serious.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot immediately and the area near the bus stand was cordoned off.
