PM holds meet to review border situation

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday reviewed the situation along the Indo-Pak border at a meeting with Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Defence Minister George Fernandes.

"Various issues were discussed... not just the military situation," Singh said after the meeting at the prime minister's Race Course Road residence in New Delhi.

Asked if it was a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, he said Vajpayee had asked them to come over for a discussion on various issues.

To a question, Singh said there was no change in the programmes of Vajpayee, who is scheduled to leave for Almaty on June 2 for the two-day Conference and Interaction on Confidence Building Measures in Asia.

However, the defence minister cancelled his visit to Singapore in view of prevailing situation.

Fernandes was to arrive in Singapore on May 31 to attend a three-day Asia-Pacific Defence Ministers' meeting.

The London-based International Institute of Strategic Affairs had organised the event.

India had been invited to the event for the first time.
