Fresh violence in Godhra, two killed in police firing

Authorities promptly imposed curfew in the walled city areas and made preventive arrests.

Police suspect that the violence could be the fallout of the chargesheet filed recently against some accused in the Godhra carnage.

The trouble started when some people burst crackers (sutali bombs) in the locality around midnight creating panic and triggering heavy stone throwing and rioting.

The two persons were killed when police lobbed teargas shells and opened fire to control the situation, Panchmahal Collector Jayanti S Ravi said.

Both the deceased and the seven injured belonged to the minority community.

"It was an act of mischief aimed at sabotaging Saturday's Id festival," Bhargava said.

K P S Gill, security advisor to the chief minister, who visited Godhra to take stock of the situation on Saturday, directed police and civil authorities to take stern action against those responsible for precipitating the violence.

So far, 12 persons from both communities have been taken into custody as a precautionary measure, Panchmahal district Superintendent of Police Raju Bhargava said.
