Three civilians, jawan killed in Pak fire, India retaliates

Indian troops have caused heavy damage to men and material in retaliatory action along the international border in Jammu, while three civilians and an army jawan were killed and seven injured on the Indian side in Pakistani shelling in Jammu and Kashmir since yesterday, a defence spokesman said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked heavy firing and shelling in Rajouri, Palanwalla and Samba sectors, he said.

In the Pakistani shelling and firing in Khour and Palanwala areas of Jammu, two civilians identified as Shakuntla Devi (17) and Ashish Kumar (six) died on the spot, while another civilian, Uttam Kumar (25), succumbed to injuries in the hospital last night, a police spokesman said.

An Army jawan was killed and another injured in these areas, the defence spokesman said, adding that six persons, including five women were injured. They were later hospitalised.

He said a large number of heads of cattle perished in the Pakistani firing. About 30 houses have also been damaged in the Chhamb and Jurian sectors.

In Rajouri sector, enemy fire from Devigarh Fort attempted to target Ramgarh Fort, Kesar Gali and Bartai Gali since last evening, he said, adding that Indian troops in retaliation targetted Pakistani positions in Kharetta, Doongar Gali and Batrai Gali, mostly used as infiltration routes.

Heavy damage to men and material was caused on the Pakistani side in the retaliatory action, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said heavy exchange of firing along the international border took place in Abdullian and Vidhipur villages of RS Pura sector for about two hours last evening, causing the migration of several families from these border villages.

Reports from Poonch district said Pakistani troops also fired about 600 mortar shells in Shapur and Kerni village between 1830 hours and 1945 hours yesterday, forcing the Indian troops to give a befitting response.

Fifteen bunkers across Line of Control were destroyed, the reports said, adding that several enemy soldiers are believed to have been killed.

The intensity of firing had subsided in most of the areas along the international border and the LoC since the morning, the reports added.
