Naidu meets PM, but
says differences persist

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday said differences between his Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party persist on the Gujarat issue and that he did "not mince words" on the subject when he met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in New Delhi.

Asked whether he was satisfied with his meeting with Vajpayee, Naidu shot back: "I never said I am satisfied or dissatisfied."

He declined to respond to persistent queries on whether there had been any meeting point between him and the prime minister on the Gujarat issue. All he said was that the matter was discussed.

"Our stand has been made very clear in Parliament," he said referring to TDP's four demands, including the removal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Asked why his party supported Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi's candidature for the Lok Sabha speaker's job when the TDP itself had declined to accept the post as a mark of protest, Naidu said: "I am fighting on issues, not individuals."
