Advani promises all help to Gujarat

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Tuesday ruled out imposing President's rule in Gujarat, but promised all help to the state under Article 355 of the Constitution to overcome the trauma caused by the riots.

Addressing the BJP parliamentary party meeting, Advani said the Centre had already deployed Army and paramilitary forces and announced a rehabilitation package, which all meant Central intervention as provided under Article 355, which is to help the state from external aggression and internal disturbances.

BJP sources said that the MPs were asked to be present in strength on May 10 when the Lok Sabha would elect its speaker.

However, no names were discussed in the meeting.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was present but did not speak.
