K P S Gill's appointment to help infuse professionalism in police: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the move to appoint former Punjab police chief K P S Gill as his security adviser was aimed at bringing more professionalism in the police force of the 'hyper-sensitive' state.

"This is what even the National Human Rights Commission has suggested," Modi told reporters in Ahmedabad.

Modi said his government would take maximum possible benefit of Gill's suggestions.

The appointment has ended the suspense of the past few days on the issue.

The final decision was taken after an informal meeting Gill had with the chief minister shortly after his arrival in Ahmedabad late on Friday night.

The appointment comes three days after the Lok Sabha rejected a censure motion on Gujarat, which sought more effective intervention by the Centre through Article 355 of the Constitution to restore confidence of the minorities in the state government.

Modi and the police force have come under sharp attack for allegedly acting in a partisan way in handling the riots, which have claimed more than 850 lives, mainly Muslims.

The Gujarat government expects to gain from Gill's experience in Punjab where he effectively curbed terrorism, sources in the government said.
